What is Calamari Omega 3 Oil?

Calamari omega 3 fish oil is the newest omega 3 supplement on the market. It is obtained from the calamari (squid). Because it is so new, there isn’t much information or research on calamari omega 3 supplements available yet. However, what’s unique about calamari oil is the fact that it contains more DHA than EPA – other fish oils all contain more EPA than DHA. Both are very important for health; however DHA exerts more potent effects than EPA and is a major structural component of the brain and retina. Getting enough omega 3 fatty acids helps to protect against cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders. Omega 3 supplements may also help to prevent memory loss and cognitive decline associated with aging. EPA and DHA are very essential during early life and help the baby to achieve optimal development.

An advantage of calamari is that they have a short lifespan and are therefore less likely to accumulate toxins. Calamari omega 3 supplements (also known as squid oil omega 3) are also popular among environment-conscious consumers because they are a very sustainable source and have been certified as sustainable by Friend of The Sea. Lane Labs is another company that has started producing omega-3 supplements from calamari. Their product, EcoOmega Marine Oil Pearls, contains 85mg omega-3 per capsule, 25mg of which are EPA and 50mg are DHA. Lane Labs recommend that you take 5 softgels each day, which will amount to 425mg omega-3, of which 125mg and 250mg are EPA and DHA respectively. Lane Labs source their Eco Omega product from food grade calamari oil, pressed from calamari trimming. They guarantee that their product is “virtually free of heavy metals and contaminants.” Lane Labs Eco Omega is significantly lower in omega-3, EPA and DHA than Carslon’s CalaOmega and Applied Nutrition’s Nordic Calamari High Potency Omega-3.

 

 

Calamari Oil Vs. Fish Oil

Is one better than the other? At the moment, due to the fact that calamari oil is a new supplement, it is not possible to say that one is definitely better than the other, because there isn’t enough research on calamari omega 3 to allow for a fair comparison with fish oil. However, both have their pros and cons. The advantages of calamari oil over fish oil are:

  1. It contains more DHA than EPA (fish oils contain more EPA than DHA). It appears that DHA is the more potent of the two. In addition, during pregnancy and early life, DHA is undoubtedly more important than EPA, because DHA is a structural component of the brain and retina.
  2. In theory, calamari oil is safer than fish oil because calamari (squid) have a very short lifespan and therefore they do not accumulate toxins. However, all reputable brands of fish oil (especially those which are IFOS-certified) are thoroughly tested by independent bodies and are guaranteed to be free of contaminants.
  3. Calamari are fished in a more environmentally-friendly way because their fishing produces no by-catch and does not employ dredging nets which can damage the sea bed.

However, calamari oil suffers from an important shortcoming compared to fish oil: because it is a new supplement, there is a lack of scientific evidence investigating its effects. On the other hand, there are literally thousands of studies attesting to fish oil’s health benefits.

What about Eating Calamari?

Cooked calamari are a very healthy food. Not only are they rich in omega 3, they also provide a number of other nutrients. In fact, they are very concentrated in copper, which helps the body to absorb and utilize iron. They are also rich in selenium, which is essential for the function of enzymes and may help to reduce inflammation. Calamari, like other fish, are rich in protein, which is needed to the growth and maintenance of muscles, organs, skin, hair and nails.

Of course, calamari oil supplements are more convenient and are more concentrated in omega 3 fatty acids than eating whole calamari. However, calamari can and should be included as part of a healthy diet.
